Some people laugh when they see a person drunk at a party. Some may think it is even funnier when they pass out. But there is nothing funny about a friend who dies because they stopped breathing or choked on their own vomit after drinking too much alcohol.
Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, meaning it decreases the functioning of nerves that control involuntary actions such as breathing and the gag reflex (which prevents choking).
It is common for someone who drank too much alcohol to vomit since alcohol irritants the stomach lining. If the person is not conscious because of intoxication, there is the danger of them choking on the vomit, which could cause death by asphyxiation.
It is important to know that a person's blood alcohol concentration (BAC) can continue to rise even while he or she is passed out. Even after a person stops drinking, alcohol in the stomach and intestine continues to enter the bloodstream and circulate throughout the body. It is dangerous to assume the person will be fine by sleeping it off.
Help a friend!
