I am worried that my friend has an eating disorder like anorexia. How can I tell and what can I do to help her (or him)?

According to the National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC),warning signs of anorexia and bulimia include:

  • excessive concern about weight, shape and calories
  • unusual eating habits
  • irregular menstruation or loss of periods
  • depression or irritability
  • guilt or shame about eating
  • strict avoidance of certain foods, especially foods considered "fattening"
  • feeling fat when not "overweight"
  • noticeable weight loss (anorexia)
  • frequent weight change up and down (bulimia)

There are things you can do if you suspect your friend may have an eating disorder. It's good to express your concern for your friend's health, while still respecting her/his need for privacy and independence. She (or he) will appreciate that there are people who are concerned.
