Oral Piercing

They may look cool but these oral accessories can cause serious damage to your mouth and teeth.

 Check it out:

  • Moisture in the mouth creates a perfect breeding place for bacteria. This creates the risk for infections, especially around the pierced area.
  • You can puncture a blood vessel in the tongue — scar tissue and nerve damage can occur.
  •  The jewellery can chip and crack your teeth.
  • You may have an allergy or sensitivity to the jewellery.
  • The jewellery can also make it difficult for you to chew your food and speak clearly.

Gonna do it anyway? Learn how to minimize your risk here:

If you already went for it, remember to:

  • Keep the area very clean around the piercing.
  • Check the tightness of the jewellery to avoid loose pieces that you could swallow or choke on.
  • Remove the jewellery and wear a mouth guard when playing sports.
  • Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes and floss daily to keep your mouth healthy.
  • Call your doctor or dentist or visit a medical clinic if you have any pain, swelling, redness or a high temperature. These symptoms can be signs of an infection.
