CSI: Barrie
article 4 drew inspiration from one of the highest-rated television programs, CSI. We visited Bear Creek Secondary School and Innisdale Secondary School, and set up two displays: a crime scene with clues and a laboratory that analyzed the cause of Jane Doe’s death. Everything led to the conclusion that the killer was the TOBACCO INDUSTRY.

STEER CLEAR
article 4’s Steer Clear Campaign coincided with National Non-Smoking Week, which took place Jan. 20-26, 2008.
Children are among the most vulnerable to the damaging health effects of second-hand smoke. Principle 4 of the Declaration of the Rights of a Child states that all children should have the right to grow and develop in health. We must give a voice to the voiceless.The purpose of our campaign was to raise awareness and gain support for the legislation.

MASH BASH
article 4 organized a booth at the Royal Victoria Hospital’s MASH Bash on February 1st, 2008, at the Snow Valley Ski Resort. At this booth, we had a trivia game set up where passers by could answer common questions about the tobacco industry, and win some swag. The group also encouraged the public to make donations to RVH.

SMOKE-FREE MOVIE NIGHT
article 4’s third annual smoke-free movie night was held on February 23, 2008 at the Bayfield 7 Cinemas. This year article 4 decided to show the romantic comedy flick Definitely, Maybe, which was given a black lung for portraying smoking in the film.
The members of article 4 created an interactive display, which included a tobacco trivia game and also gruesome pig lungs. article 4 also dressed up in feather boas, sparkly top hats, and body jewellery stickers to create excitement around another successful smoke-free movie night.

RELAY FOR LIFE AT BEAR CREEK
On Friday May 9th, article 4 went down to Bear Creek Secondary School in Barrie and participated in their Relay For Life. article 4 was there having fun and educating people about tobacco with their banner, their Tobacco Trivia game, and some great prizes for everyone!

CRAIG KIELBURGER
On Tuesday, May 13th, article 4 headed out to Gryphon Theatre to hear child rights advocate and leadership specialist Craig Kielburger speak about the importance of leadership development and empowering youth. article 4 was fortunate enough to meet Craig for a few minutes prior to his speech. The youth described their projects, and Craig congratulated article 4 on their work. Craig even mentioned article 4 in his speech as an example of youth advocates.

Play, Live, Be… Tobacco Free!
article 4 joined other YAAs in the Central-East region for a fun-filled day at Victoria Beach in Cobourg on Thursday, July 3, 2008! article 4's event, Lost Jaw, presented facts about the impacts of chew tobacco and how the tobacco industry markets to youth. article 4 also shared the story of Gruen Von Behrens, an oral-cancer survivor who was once addicted to chew tobacco. In addition to the display, article 4 also organized a digging excavation for children. "Jaws" were hidden deep in the sand, and children used shovels and hands to retrieve the "jaws" in order to win a prize.

Raiders of the Last Powerwall
article 4 hosted the Raiders of the Last Powerwall on May 31, which was an event celebrating the Ontario legislation for the removal of all tobacco displays (aka ‘powerwalls’) in Ontario. The teams and article 4 had a lot of fun that day in the sun, celebrating a milestone event in the fight against Big Tobacco!
