"Shoe" Your Support Day
Goal:
- To raise awareness of the tobacco industry and how their products kill 44 people a day in Canada, or 47,000 a year. Closer to home, 16,000 in Ontario, or more than 400 per year in our area.
Target Audience:
- All students, community at large.
Overview of Event:
- Invite students to bring in an old pair of shoes or boots (still wearable) that can be used to build a monument recognizing all the people who lose their life to tobacco related illnesses. Shoes can be stacked up like a mountain or strung up around the cafeteria over a two-week period. Each day the count can be announced with a fact on tobacco use, why they are being targeted and how to quit, etc. At the end of the time period the pile can be donated to a local charity organization to shoe your support for smoke-free living. Can make it a contest between classes to see who collects the most.
Tools Required:
- Clothesline to string up shoes around hallways or auditorium
- Boxes to put shoe donations in
- Source to donate shoes to at the end of the project
- Giveaways for the class that brings in the most or to celebrate success at the end of the event
The Process:
- Set up partnership with a charity and arrange pick up shoes at end of event
- Create some quick announcement or poster reminders to bring in shoes
- Prepare some tobacco facts to give out with numbers update
- Announce winning class or final tally to school
- Invite media to do a story/photo on the event and if they don’t come submit picture and information directly to paper via email or drop off;
- Document results, how many students reached, impact, feedback
