St. Joan of Arc the big winner
The judges have ruled and the 2007-2008 Youth Stomp Out Tobacco Media Award winners have been chosen. This year, St. Joan of Arc high school in Barrie took top honours in the contest that challenges teens to write and film a 30 to 60-second PSA that exposes the tobacco industry’s ongoing efforts to hook teens on its highly addictive and deadly products. Need an example -- think candy-flavored cigarillos & chew tobacco. Now think who they would appeal to – and you get an idea of the marketing tactics used.
1 st Place How Far Would you Go? – a short film on the chemical additives in tobacco that you’ll also find in your bathroom, on the roadway and in the morgue described by took top honours in this year’s contest. It was created by St. Joan of Arc students Robyn Pitocco, Craig Hepditch and Cheryl Chaput under the leadership of teacher Eric Skelton.
2 nd Place The Facts Still Hurt , by Keith LaPlume and Timothy Armstrong of St. Peter’s Secondary took 2 nd place and fellow students Sean Advent, Justin Walmsley, Jonathan Cortese and Jaz Kenny-Dowdall walked away with 3 rd place Anti-smoking. Teacher Dino Zorzi was the teacher liaison for both films.
